Menopause and Mood

Are hormonal changes causing changes in your mood?

I was watching a video yesterday where a woman said "my give a shit is dialed way down", and I felt it.

Feel like something hormonal is going on?

You're probably right!

Menopause and peri-menopause can feel like an emotional roller coaster you didn’t sign up for, complete with all the unexpected twists and turns.

It’s not uncommon to feel like you’re losing it when your mood shifts from calm to tearful to irritable in what feels like the blink of an eye. From a mental health perspective, I want you to know that you are not alone, and you are definitely not crazy.

These emotional changes are part of a very natural process that happens in your body, even though it might feel anything but natural some days. The good news is, understanding what’s happening can make this journey a little easier—and maybe even give you a laugh along the way.

The Roller-Coaster of Emotions (and more)

Let’s talk about those emotional challenges.

One minute, you’re crying over a touching dog food commercial, and the next, you’re ready to snap at your partner for breathing too loudly.

Sound familiar? Hormonal changes during menopause can amplify emotions, making it hard to feel grounded. Sometimes, it feels like PMS decided to move in permanently! And sure, it’s frustrating when you can’t remember why you walked into a room, but there’s humor to be found in these moments too.

Think of it this way: you might be forgetting names, but at least you’re now the reigning queen of improvised to-do lists written on napkins, sticky notes, and occasionally your own hand.

If I can't make jokes along the way, we're in real trouble, sisters.  I am navigating this "fun" journey with you.

Recognize the Signs

It’s helpful to recognize some of the key signs so you can understand what’s going on, rather than letting these changes catch you off guard.

Mood swings are a big one—feeling anxious, irritable, or unusually sad without an obvious reason.

Then there’s that sneaky brain fog that makes you forget the word for… oh, what’s the thing you cook with? A pan, yes!

You might also notice changes in your sleep—like waking up at 3 a.m. for no apparent reason—and this lack of rest can amplify those emotional ups and downs.

Anyone else experiencing a lack of libido?

Knowing these signs doesn’t fix everything, but it does remind you that your body is adapting, and you’re not alone in experiencing this.

As challenging as this phase can be, please remember that what you’re feeling is valid, and it’s okay to seek support.

You don’t have to go through this alone. The more we talk about menopause and the emotions that come with it, the more we can normalize the experience and support one another.

Take it one day at a time, be kind to yourself, and remind yourself that this is a season in life—not a permanent state.
