How Our Practice Intake Uses a Biopsychosocial-Spiritual Approach—and What That Means for You
Your first visit is more than just routine paperwork and brief questions. We use a biopsychosocial-spiritual (BPSS) framework to guide our intake process, providing a truly holistic understanding of your health and well-being. Here’s what that means for you as a patient, and what you can expect during your initial assessment.
What Is the Biopsychosocial-Spiritual Model?
The BPSS model recognizes that health is shaped by multiple, interconnected factors:
Biological: Your physical health, genetics, and medical history
Psychological: Your emotions, thoughts, behaviors, and coping skills
Social: Your relationships, community, cultural background, and support systems
Spiritual: Your beliefs, values, sense of purpose, and spiritual practices
I believe that understanding each of these areas is essential to providing effective, compassionate care. That’s why our intake process includes questions covering each domain—so we can support you as a whole person, not just treat symptoms.
Why This Matters for You
This approach allows me to:
Identify root causes and contributing factors to health challenges
Tailor interventions to your unique needs and values
Collaborate with you to set meaningful goals
Respect your individuality, background, and beliefs
Patients often tell me they feel truly seen and heard, as a person.
Sample Biopsychosocial-Spiritual Assessment Questions
Here’s an example of the kinds of questions you might encounter during your intake:
Biological:
What current or past medical conditions have you experienced?
Are you taking any medications?
Do you have any allergies?
How would you describe your general physical health?
Psychological:
How have you been feeling emotionally lately?
Have you experienced anxiety, depression, or significant stress?
How do you typically cope with challenges?
Are there any recent changes in your sleep, appetite, or energy?
Social:
Who are the important people in your life?
Do you have a support network?
Are there any cultural or community factors that influence your health?
Are you experiencing any challenges at work, school, or home?
Spiritual:
Are there spiritual or religious beliefs that are important to you?
Do you have practices (such as prayer, meditation, rituals) that support you?
How do your beliefs or values help you cope during difficult times?
Is there anything spiritual you’d like us to know to support your care?
Your Experience Matters
I'm committed to a welcoming, inclusive environment where every aspect of your well-being is respected. A BPSS intake is just the first step in your journey—one that honors your full story and supports your path to health and healing.
If you have questions about any process or need accommodations, please share them with me. Your comfort, safety, and dignity are always our priorities.
As always — science, soul, and straight talk. Because you deserve all three.
